Pour Wilhelm Kress, le 15 octobre 1901, date du crash de son aéroplane sur le lac de Tullnerbach, c’est un rêve qui se brise, pour lequel il s’était investi à 100 % et avait repris des études d’ingénieur à l’École Polytechnique de Vienne. Un avion muni de trois ailes, reposant sur deux flotteurs, avec un manche à balai pour les commandes et un moteur à explosion Benz, qui n’est pas étranger à cette contre-performance.

Gustave Whitehead claims a circling 11 km flight

Gustave Whitehead claims a circling 11 km (7 mi) flight over water in a 40 hp- 29.9-kW- engine-powered flying machine with wheels and an amphibious boat-shaped hull, reportedly rebuilt from the Whitehead Aeroplane No. 21 of 1901. He supposedly makes a water landing near his starting point, and helpers pull him from the water.
